• These wonderful patterned paper lamps from Brooklynbased Levent & Romme really caught our eye at this years BKLYN Designs show. Realized first as pen and ink illustrations, the patterns are then cut into a single sheet of thick watercolor paper. The paper is softly textured and opaque enough to make the designs pop, and the rigidity lends itself to the shades intricate cuts. Upping the coolness (and sustainability) quotient, the shade fits together using a tabbed design so that it forms a tube without any fasteners or adhesives. … full story

• Oscar de la RentarnThe designer showed a classic lineup with a bit of an edge for Spring 2009, including crisp white shirts, full skirts, elegant party frocks and uptown accessories like brooches, layered necklaces, oversized sunglasses and pretty day bags. The standouts were the left-of-field bits: color-blocked swimwear and a graphic navy-and-white print that came in many shapes and looked especially stunning as a strapless gown with a peplum skirt. • We just had to wait until after Valentine's Day to say this--we're thinking red is the hot color for Fall 2009. Not only have head-to-toe red looks come together from Lyn Devon and 6119 Ilana Sutherland, but, last night, Ruffian sent their red-clad models down a matching runway. Combine the monochromatic examples with the glimpses of it at Rag & Bone (and color is hard to come by with those gents), the transparent instances at Verrier, and the ruby prints at Karen Walker, and you've got yourself a pretty strong case for the color. rn … full story

• Jason Wu showrnrnCello Song by Nick Drake was the opening song at the Jason Wu show and it was much like the atmosphere there - calm, soothing and peaceful. There's been a lot of hype surrounding Jason Wu since Michelle Obama wore one of his gowns to an inaugural ball, so I was excited to see his newest collection.rnrnIt was chic and elegant and reminded me a little of a Roland Mouret show I saw a couple of years ago, where elegance reigned. Sheath dresses in colors like chartreuse and teal were tastefully cut to the body and detailed with twists and gathers at the waist or on the bodice. rnrnI loved the opening look - a gray crop blazer, paired with a pretty printed chiffon blouse and a wool flannel cigarette pant with a drape pocket detail (note: we've seen some great new pant shapes today - stay tuned for more - we think they will be key going forward). rnrnrnHe showed skirts too. They were full and feminine in above-the-knee lengths and were paired with either sweaters or jackets that were cropped or knee-length. rnrnrnHis color palette was charming and optimistic in shades like petal pink, sky blue, electric blue, violet and fuchsia. rnrnrnAnd, a wide strap, choked-up sandal in black, nude or colorful patent leather, designed by Manolo Blahnik for Jason Wu, added tough chic edge that nicely juxtaposed the feminine elegance of the collection.rnrnrnThe closing look, a navy silk tulle gown with silver point d'esprit embroidery was definitely magazine-cover worthy.rn … full story

• Backstage Beauty Fall 2009 - Herve Leger by Max AzriarnJust left backstage from Herve Leger by Max Azria where Diane Kendal lead the team for Nars cosmetics. In an article in today's WWD, designers were asked in interviews what their advice is on how to update a wardrobe without spending a lot of money. • (NEW YORK) For better or for worse, Thakoon Panichgul was thrust into the public spotlight when soon-to-be First Lady Michelle Obama wore not one, but two of his creations on the campaign trail. His Fall 2009 collection showed that he is more than capable of handling the pressure. "There was surrealism, there was Lee Miller, but overall I wanted flights of fancy," Panichgul said of his sophisticated and grown up--yet unapologetically pretty--collection. Several pairs of culottes were shockingly un-elementary school, peplums graced both a trench and a cascading ruffle gown, and an incredibly innovative chiffon-to-wool degrade (sheer at the top, opaque at the bottom) shift dress was gorgeous-with a slip, completely First Lady-appropriate. As far as his flights of fancy: a mirrored, disco ball-esque dress and sumptuous, colored furs were enough to get any girl's heart beating just a bit faster. … full story

• A not-so-secret garden, courtesy of wall hangings depicting a topiary'ed paradise, provided the setting for Cavalli's Spring collection. Not his usual type? No worries. This season, there was something for most, if not everyone. The dress-centric collection focused largely on evening, while even floor-grazing shirt-dresses were forged of diaphanous chiffon. Gamine floral prints reminiscent of kid-room wallpaper launched the looks, which stuck to extreme lengths of mini and maxi. This is Cavalli--why compromise? … full story

• (PARIS) "I thought it was fabulous," gushed Glenn Close of her first couture experience. "The dresses with the paillettes that get bigger as they go down look like waterfalls!" The actress captured the memory of her favorite frocks with a digital camera at the Armani Privé show at the Palais de Challoit Monday evening, which offered up a modern take on 30s Shanghai style--62 ways--for Spring 2009. Skintight skirtsuits and sculpted trouser suits in silk jacquards, macrame lace, and a more risqué lacquer-effect silk trounced down the runway accessorized with lacquer-heeled shoes and wedges, flaring at the shoulders, hips, cuffs, and ankles, and tassel details. "It was beautiful," said model Eugenia Silva. "The skirts were so tight the models were walking in little geisha movements!" Armani rounded off the collection with a selection of red carpet-worthy gowns dripping with paillettes and all-over sequins. "My inspiration: c'est un rêve," explained the designer after his collection. "The market isn't the same, it no longer exists. Dreams are what we have." Couture clients like Becca Cason Thrash were impressed with the new options in store. "It's a real departure for Mr. Armani," she said. "It was bright and bold and hopeful, and something new for his customer."rn … full story

• It's one of theatre's most sacred taboos. You must never say the word "Macbeth" in a theater, unless you are performing the play. Should you say the word "Macbeth" you must leave the room, turn around three times, spit, and then ask to be let back in.rnrnAnd our President just uttered the word in Ford's Theater! Now, Ford's Theater does not have the best track record with Presidents, especially Presidents one could describe as "Lincoln-ish." Now, there is debate as to whether non-theatre people are immune from this curse, but I think Rahm should make Mr. B turn around a spit a few times, just to be safe. … full story

• Opening tonight at BellJar: Lisa Congdon's Love Me Not, a modern upgrade of Valentine's notes from the Victorian era. The show will include paintings, illustration, collage and shadowbox. Here's what Congdon said about her show: "Valentine's Day reached its height of celebration in the Victorian Era. Valentines cards were produced in tens of thousands, from whimsical to slightly vulgar. Their designs included lace paper, embossed envelopes, glass or metal mirrors, ribbons, real feathers, and flowers or dried ferns. Chubby, adult-looking children called cherubs adorned them. Just as important as the decoration are the unabashed pleading for affection and pledging of undying devotion that accompany traditional Valentines. In Love Me Not, I explore both the traditional decor and subject matter of Valentines from the Victorian Era along with common Valentines sentiments and proclamations. In some cases I have taken the gaudy decoration and purposefully toned it down to be more austere to play with the viewer's sensibilities."rnrn … full story

• There's nothing like a good kiss. You lean toward your beloved, close your eyes, hope your breath is okay, and ... fade to black. But a kiss, as we're now learning from scientific research, is hardly just a kiss. Rather, it's a complex act of courtship that may help us pick our mate, perhaps even through unconscious chemical signals, and assess and maintain a relationship. "Kissing is not just lips meeting other lips," says Sarah Woodley, Ph.D., a biologist at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. … full story

After a country-club dance she manages to goad her usually unenthusiastic husband into discussing the affair. So where are the literary results? "Psychedelic" means "mind-manifesting." Where, then, are the manifestations? Where are the bodies of work that have come to us as a result of this explosive expansion of the pharmacopoeia, this unprecedented transformation of possibilities for tinkering with the mind's chemistry? Have drugs helped anyone to write anything that would have seemed surprising and new to the Prophet Ezekiel or William Blake?rnrn … full story

• Men, it seems, are bad at keeping track of their bedtime activities. When asked how many partners they had slept with, men overestimated their sexual history. Norman Brown, of the University of Alberta, discovered a reason for this exaggeration: men couldn't remember and would instead roughly estimate their number of lovers. Two out of three women remembered each partner they had or they kept a running tally. They reported an average of 6.2 people. Men, however, were twice as likely not to remember, leaving their calculations to guesswork. They reported an average of 11.9 women.rn … full story
