• Honda S2000 was already a green vehicle courtesy its 4-cylinder fuel-efficient engine. However, like always there was someone who found electricity better than fossil fuel. This sustainability led Brian convert his Honda S2000 to run on an all-electric motor. The internal combustion engine was replaced by an Advanced DC electric motor capable of operating between 72 and 144 volts.rnrnTo keep the sporty feel intact, Brian tuned the motor to run on 144 volts. The motor is powered by 45 lithium-ion batteries rated at 160Ah. 30 such batteries are placed in the engine compartment and the remaining 15 in the trunk along with a charge monitoring system. … full story

• The Rinspeed iChange concept, headed to the Geneva Motor Show, is being touted as the world's first car with a body adapting to the number of passengers on board thanks to a magical rear end.rnrnSeriously, the Swiss auto tuning company claims "In seconds a streamlined one-seater sports car transforms into a comfortable car with ample room for three. The trick: At the push of a button the rear end of the teardrop-shaped car magically pops up." Wow, who knew there was such a thing as a magical rear end?rnrnAnyway, the iCharge is powered by an electric motor mated to lithium-ion batteries available in two different stack configurations, one for short- and one for long-distance. Both choices will apparently be charged by any electric power source including solar. The motor produces 150kW, giving the car a top speed of 220 km/h (137 MPH) and a 0-to-100 km/h (0-to-62 MPH) time of slightly more than four seconds thanks to a six-speed gearbox borrowed from the Subaru WRX.rnrn … full story

• At a Sunday morning event that was more mock political rally than press conference, General Motors trotted out what seemed like their entire vehicle lineup. The highlight, though, was the car you see here the much hotter sister of the production-intent Chevy Volt, the Cadillac Converj concept. The coupe would run on the same lithium-ion battery/gas engine combo as the Chevy Volt, a system that General Motors now calls Voltec (which, yes, sounds like the name of a Transformer). Its an extended-range electric system that drives the car 40 miles on electricity before a small gas engine kicks in to generate backup power. The family resemblance to the production Volt suggests that the Converj incorporates at least some of the aerodynamic lessons-learned that led GM to so dramatically revise the original Volt concept. rnrn … full story

Estimates put the savings over a six-year service lifetime at 11 million gallons of fuel, not to mention 115,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions.rnrn … full story

• While in the US, a lot of people are keen on the idea of having full-blown car parking lots with solar panels to charge the hybrids, things roll a bit differently in Japan. Last December, Sanyo introduced an eneloop electric hybrid bicycle with motor assist. But it's not just Sanyo - other electronic companies such as Yamaha, Panasonic and Toshiba have their own products as well. And since bikes are a big thing in the country, the concept of having a dedicated parking lot of hybrid bikes complete with a charging station and solar panels at the roof is definitely welcomed.rnrn … full story

• Today we received reports that Aptera (which was supposed to begin delivering vehicles before the end of 2008) won't be delivering vehicles until October 2009. Aptera is blaming the delay, basically, on their own short-sightedness. They weren't prepared to deliver the sorts of things car buyers might want...windows that roll down...for example.rnrnSlightly more disturbing is the request for those who have submitted their $500 refundable deposit to convert that to a non-refundable deposit. This will (according to them) let them gauge true demand for the vehicle better. It will also let them spend that money, which is currently being held in escrow.rn … full story

• As the global economic crisis continues to spread, European car makers find themselves in financial straits not unlike those of the Big Three here at home. Norway's electric car company Think Global was hit especially hard and is being forced to halt all production.rnrnUnlike the lusty Tesla Roadster, Th!nk models are more utilitarian; EVs like the diminutive City and the cutting-edge Ox - a larger all-electric family concept now unlikely to see production. According to Cleantech, Th!nky even wanted to bring those vehicles stateside, but "the status of those plans is now in question." The company's pain is quite evident, for even chunks of its website appear to be down. rnrnLike GM, Chrysler and Ford, which once owned the company, Th!nk unsuccessfully pleaded for a bailout. Tesla faced the same fate, having strong-armed the government by threatening to call off the upcoming electric sedan. At this juncture the Norwegian automaker's only hope appears to be GE, which had already once helped Th!nk with a $4 million investment. rn … full story
