Question from reader RE: Insurance coverage - Respond on Twitter

9:15 AM Apr 21st
• Hello. I just had a bilateral mastectomy, diep method used three weeks ago. My doctors were fantastic and took all the fear away. I happen to work in HR at the hospital this procedure was done, and I handle the benefits so I have access to insurance information and contacts. My plastic surgeon is the only one in New England that does the diep procedure and he participates with insurance. What he did was magnificent...my breasts are so natural, the core of my stomach was left in tack (a nice tummy tuck was included) and though the surgery took 17 hours (his part 14) it was well worth it in the end. To be inconvenienced by B/C is one thing. To be happy with the results after is how it should be. But, insurance only allowed $3800 of the $31000. bill. This procedure cost him a full day at work and to be compensated so little doesn't seem worth it. Do you see insurance interfering in the choices women will make in reconstruction? Regards, Pat Lago …full story

The Not So Lonely Road Of Breast Cancer

11:11 PM Nov 30th
• Many women of today’s biggest fear is breast cancer. With staggering statistics of over a million women each year being diagnosed each year, it is not hard to understand why there is this shadow of worry. Improvements in technology have allowed the scientific and medical world to more accurately screen and detect the condition, but unfortunately we are nowhere closer to defining an exact cause or even know what can be done to prevent it. Is it hereditary? Surprisingly enough only a an extremely low amount can be linked to genealogy. It also seems that the scientific community is less motivated to on the age old saying of "prevention is better than cure," with the majority of funds being emptied into more lucrative market of treatment, rather than the research dedicated to finding and eliminating the cause of the cancer. …full story

• "We have survival rates we didn't have in 1965. When my mother had breast cancer, it was a death sentence," Moore said. Survivorship rates are up for all forms of cancer. People with cancer had a 50 percent chance of surviving for five years in the 1970s. Now, that rate is up to 66 percent, according to information culled from 1996 to 2003. But cancer is still the second most common cause of death in the United States — only heart disease exceeds it. …full story

Open Letter From A Breast Cancer Survivor

12:35 PM Oct 15th
• When I was first diagnosed with breast cancer, I was quite open about it – but this turned out to be a mistake. By far the hardest part of handling my condition has been people’s responses to my news. Some people simply didn’t know what to say, so avoided me the minute I turned up. Meanwhile others went to pieces, leaving me to handle their distress as well as my own feelings. But the most common response was an intense interest in every minute medical detail. I had no idea that my privacy would be invaded in so many ways. People I barely knew felt it acceptable to interrupt whatever I was doing at the time in order to hug me and tell me about their auntie “who has just the same as you and she’s still alive” or offer to “come and see me”. …full story

Breast Cancer Treatment Time May Be Cut In Half - cbs4denver.com

6:24 PM Sep 23rd
• The study may entirely change the way doctors treat early-stage breast cancer in America. It shows three weeks of intense radiation therapy is as effective as the usual 5- to 6-week course. "No question, typically women will go in almost every day for 5 to 6 weeks for radiation," CBS4 Medical Editor Dr. Dave Hnida said. "Now it looks like we take that time and safely cut it to 3 weeks, and 'safely' is the key word." The major new study followed more than 1,000 women for more than 12 years. They found in those treated with 3 weeks of intense radiation after a lumpectomy, the rate of recurrence was low, as with longer therapy. …full story
