• One morning no matter how hard I tried, my son would not put a shoe or a sock on his right foot. After an hour of wailing, meltdowns, time outs, bribes and begging, I gave up. I decided to walk to school per our usual routine, albeit with my five-year old partially barefoot. Undaunted, I led the procession with broom in hand to sweep away bits of broken glass, splinters or bird droppings that could be dangerous to his naked toes. Keep in mind that my son wanted to go to school so badly that he was willing to walk in with one shoe. Although I felt ridiculous, and Im sure he did, too, I was quite proud of both of us.rnrn … full story

• Parenting a child with a developmental disability during the first few years is more difficult than any parent can imagine. I look back and marvel that Ive made it this far. Yet much of the difficulty I faced was self-imposed, driven by my own need to fix my child right away. I was encouraged down that path by the medical community, the educational system and well-intentioned family members. All that well-intentioned and authoritative advice drowned out my maternal instincts and left me riddled with doubt and prone to do whatever stupid thing someone told me I should, simply because I no longer trusted myself to know what was right for my son.rnrn … full story

• April 2 is World Autism Day, but we'll be focusing on this prevalent brain development disorder all month.rnrnAutism is one diagnosis that falls within a larger group called the Autism Spectrum Disorders or ASD. A diagnosis of autism falls on one end of the spectrum because patients exhibit more pronounced symptoms and indicative behavior patterns. Milder forms, such as Asperger's Syndrome, fall at the other end of the spectrum. Patients with Aspergers exhibit less pronounced symptoms and indicative behavior patterns.rnrn … full story

• You might think that you could recognize autism in someone without much trouble, but neurologists and mental health specialists are now realizing that many people with high-functioning autism disorders often fly under the radar.rnrnLike classical autism, Asperger syndrome and high-functioning autism are neurological conditions that cause impairments in communication and socialization. So people with these conditions might have trouble having a back-and-forth conversation or picking up on body language. Unlike people with classical autism, people with these disorders always have average or above-average intellectual abilities. In fact, it's thought that a number of historic figures, such as Albert Einstein, may have had Asperger syndrome and been aided by their ability to zero in a given issue. But until recently, these disorders were not widely recognized, which is why more and more adults are being diagnosed.rnrn … full story

• "Autism is terrifying the community of Somali immigrants in Minneapolis, and some pediatricians and educators have joined parents in raising the alarm. But public health experts say it is hard to tell whether the apparent surge of cases is an actual outbreak, with a cause that can be addressed, or just a statistical fluke. "rnrnRead More in the New York Times.rnrnHigh autism rates have been found in Somali imigrants living in Sweden and in Minnesota. What does Sweden have in common with Minnesota, besides wolves and snow? They are both at high lattitudes and get low sunlight, especially in the winter. Swedish researchers have proposed that vitamin D deficiency may play a role in the high incidence of autism found among Somali immigrant children. Vitamin D is made in the skin from sunlight. rnrn … full story

• April is Autism Month. These are the first three in series of short videos of a lecutre by Julie Matthews that address the value of special diets in the management of Autism. In these videos, the speaker talks about the faulty body biochemistry that can affect the brain "downstream" which can be managed to some degree by improving the health of the gut. To optimize gut health and improve brain function, start by getting rid of foods that contain food additives and food coloring, avoid simple sugars and simple carbohydrates, add healthy bacteria to the diet in the form of yogurt (unsweetened) or supplements, and make sure to provide children with the normal healthy fat in diet; fatty fish or fish oil, pasture-fed meats, unrefined grapeseed, olive oils, and even some saturated fat. Fat is a major building block for the brain. rnrnWhen children feel better, they learn better. rnrn … full story

Autism is characterized by impaired social interaction, problems with verbal and nonverbal communication, and unusual, repetitive, or severely limited activities and interests. Other ASDs include Asperger syndrome, Rett syndrome, childhood disintegrative disorder, and pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (usually referred to as PDD-NOS). Experts estimate that three to six children out of every 1,000 will have autism. Males are four times more likely to have autism than females. • … full story
